Out of the Box - Lineage II (PC)

Lineage II can be a lot of fun, but a big experience curve, occasional tedium, exploits, and PvP may limit its appeal.

[Editor's Note: Last year GameSpy implemented a new review policy for massively multiplayer games, owing to the time it takes to explore high-level content and allow a community to settle post-launch. We now post short "Out of the Box" impressions of an MMOG when it's released, a formal review some weeks later, and short follow-up pieces in later months as the game evolves and changes. As Lineage II hits shelves this week, we offer our first impressions and look forward to the game's long-term potential.]

Player-versus-player combat is always one of the stickiest situations to deal with in a massively multiplayer game. When implemented properly, PvP allows a level of player/guild interaction, and politicking that the safer "Theme Park" MMOs simply cannot match. Unfortunately, unlimited PvP also runs the risk of alienating players who are just looking to quest, adventure, and fight monsters, and don't want to deal with other players looking to ruin their fun. Attempting to balance the two was the tough challenge that the developers of the just-released Lineage II faced. It's a bold choice that the developers should be applauded for.

Unfortunately, based on the few days I played the release version of Lineage II, the game's systems don't quite work the way they're supposed to. Don't get me wrong, if you enjoy a lot of social interaction and don't mind the danger of PvP action, you'll find a lot to like in Lineage II, but much of what I've found wrong in the last couple of days isn't immediately obvious when you first start to play. Instead, it hits you hard and fast the minute you go outside the narrow boundaries of the game's "civilized" areas.

The game's basic structures are pretty sound. First, there's the graphics. Those easily stand out as Lineage II's best quality. Put simply, they're spectacular. Oh, they won't win any prizes when compared to the eye-candy of an Unreal Tournament 2004, but the original Unreal engine makes Lineage II the best looking of the current generation of MMOs. It certainly beats the pants off of EverQuest, or any other earlier MMO titles -- and considering the skimpiness of the clothing on the female character models, I mean that literally.

Much has been made of the beauty of the game's characters. Still, if you think the screenshots look great, wait until you see them in motion. The character designs are heavily influenced by Japanese anime and are definitely designed with "sexiness" first and foremost in mind. It helps, of course, if you're a male. More prudish gamers may find the character's outfits outrageous or offensive, but there is a definite attraction to playing with and among characters that are so highly exaggerated sexually.

The rest of the world is no slouch, either. It's filled with beautiful landscapes, excellent-looking monsters, and gargantuan architecture that's a wonder to behold. The biggest flaw is that there's not much in the way of character customization, nor are there any plans to add more in the future. Whichever race you select, you'll have the choice of two male and two female bodies, each with only two faces and four hairstyles. As you play through the beginning areas, you'll spend a lot of time surrounded by exact clones of yourself, which is a bit disturbing.

Movement and character control are both fine. While both the "click on the landscape" method of movement and the layout of the user interface are a bit unorthodox, they're certainly adequate. The rest of the low-level game is a pretty standard MMO -- kill a zillion creatures and do a few quests to get started, learn some new skills and new spells, and get your first piece to new equipment. This section is fun for a while, although like many MMOs it can get a bit repetitive and tedious. Level 20 seems to be where the game begins to open up with prestige classes and clan politics such as castle sieges. Unfortunately, the pace of leveling is pretty slow and only gets slower as you start going up. In fact, that's where I started getting my first indication of the trouble to come -- the pace. Everything about Lineage II seems slow.

There's an absurd inflation problem in the world that seems to be implemented by design. Everything takes an incredibly long time. Healing is slow, traveling is slow, quests are long (one of the first ones I got required me to kill 50 monsters for an incredibly paltry return), and worst of all, everything in the game is fueled by the never-ending need to acquire insane amounts of gold. It took me quite some time acquire enough "adena" for some basic armor and a slightly better sword. This problem is alleviated a bit when you find a group of people to adventure with, but you should forget about soloing through Lineage II. This is definitely a game that requires a large number players working together, and the higher you go, the more players you need.

My tendency toward soloing and adventuring in small groups was only the beginning of my issues. Players who enjoy working in large groups and clans won't even notice the pace problem. Other issues are a bit more serious. Even as I was leveling up my character, I couldn't help but notice characters running around with drool-worthy half-million adena swords and incredibly awesome armor. Sure, they were much higher in level than I was, but the equipment they were carrying was way beyond even their reach. I got my answer the first time I tried to venture between cities and headed out into the no-man's land. Between the low-level game of your first 10 levels, and level 20 where specialized classes begin to be available and the true fun of the game's inter-clan politics begins, I found a world where dependence on high-level equipment and permanent PvP had combined to create an experience hump that might possibly kill the game for a lot of players.

Think about the largest game where players can kill one another at will -- "Real Life." What keeps people from randomly killing each other in the real world? Most people's baser instincts are kept in check by the law, the police, and the fear of the consequences of violating it. MMOs that allow players to kill one another at will must have the rough equivalent of all these things in place. If they don't, you're going to get a lot of what I'm seeing in Lineage II -- players stealing monster kills from each other, players "ninja-ing" in and grabbing gold drops, and higher-level players abusing newbies who can't defend themselves.

To an extent, though, this is par for the course. Players who enjoy permanent PvP and inter-player politics expect that some of this will go on, and all other things being equal, Lineage II has gameplay structures that keep it somewhat under control. They're not perfect, but they're being tweaked all the time based on user feedback. Unfortunately, all things are not equal. PvP in Lineage II is dependent on the type of equipment you're carrying, which means you need lots and lots of gold. Players between levels 10-20 who are just taking their first steps into the larger world of Lineage II will find themselves at the mercy of higher-level players with far more powerful weapons. Universal PvP means that the "law" tends to side with the biggest swords.

Many players caught in this bind go back to more secure areas, where they've already finished the content and simply kill a lot of low-level monsters for gold to acquire the kind of equipment they need to play the higher-level game. This process is referred to as "farming." Farming is kind of a boring grind, though. But what if you could get the game to play by itself for a while? Welcome to the wonderful world of bots and macros. Why bother with the level grind when you can get the game to play for you and you can come back 24 hours later with a half-million adena in your pocket? The only people you hurt are those who get mindlessly attacked by your bot when they dare to enter your "farm." That's right: bots + farming + non-consensual PvP equals entire areas of the world that are essentially off-limits because adena farmers won't allow you to enter.

Even worse, though, are the collections of characters with names like "AdenaFarmInc1057" from servers in China or Korea. They're easy to recognize because they claim whole sections of the game, farm it, and turn their gold over to a character named "AdenaFarmIncBoss." These guys are the ultimate exploiters because they'll take those collections of adena and auction them off on eBay for about $50 US per 1 million adena. They don't talk (and even if they do, they don't speak English) and they'll kill you if you come near their patch of game. All this means that they "lock off" sections of the world, don't participate in player politics, and contribute nothing to a game utterly dependent on player interaction to be fun. Then they sell their stuff to players who use their unearned equipment to make life miserable for other people.

This problem of "farming" was prevalent within the recent beta, and although it's still too early too tell how widespread it will be in the retail version, it's clearly happening within the release version as well. NCSoft is aware of the problem of bots, and they believe that the game going commercial -- along with more rigorous enforcement of rules regarding farming and "botting" -- should reduce the problems. According to NCSoft spokesperson David Swofford:

"We're aware of bots in Lineage II. They were much more prevalent in (the) open beta than they've been now that the game has gone commercial in the last 24 hours. We've already noticed a significant drop off in these types of activities. Exploiting such as farming or botting is not permitted and the penalty in most cases (is) banishment from the game. That was much harder to police in the open beta because players could quickly create a new account and get right back into the game to do their "thing" without having to pay. Now that the players have to pay to play, this type of activity is dropping off considerably."

All this, of course, is just a first impression of Lineage II. NCSoft has promised a number of improvements in the game with its first major upgrade -- which we'll evaluate in our full review. This game still has the potential to be one of the best MMOs out there. Unfortunately, the toxic mix of PvP, level-grinding gameplay, and need for crazy amounts of gold that puts non-bot players at a disadvantage is a huge problem. Let's hope that the problem doesn't kill the game before it even begins. •
